ALBANY (AP) -- A bill that would continue New York state's restrictions and seasons for hunting with a crossbow until December 2014 is before Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

The current regulations, which expire at the end of the year, allow the use of crossbows only during the regular firearms season and late muzzleloader seasons. The use of crossbows to hunt deer is not allowed during the regular bow hunting season.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports that the bill's approval by the state Legislature was widely seen as a victory for bow hunters who lobbied against crossbow use within the regular archery season.

The New York Crossbow Coalition was lobbying for more liberal use of crossbows during the fall hunting seasons
