OSWEGO (AP) -- Police patrols in northern New York are out to enforce safety regulations as the salmon fishing season nears its peak on Lake Ontario's tributaries.
The Palladium-Times of Oswego reports that Oswego police charged two people with trespass last week for being inside the danger zone on the Oswego River without wearing life vests.
In September 2010, two fishermen drowned in the Oswego River. Brookfield Renewable Energy Group subsequently introduced new safety rules for the area around its dam. Signs were erected marking the popular fishing area as dangerous and saying safety vests were mandatory there.
In August, Brookfield reached a $1.8 million settlement of a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the families of the men who drowned two years ago. Neither man was wearing a life jacket.
