SYRACUSE (AP) -- The New York Air National Guard's Syracuse-based 174th Fighter Wing has become the 174th Attack Wing.
The name change was made official during a ceremony at Hancock Field on Sunday and reflects the unit's switch from flying fighter aircraft to operating remotely piloted drones.
The name change comes nearly three years after the unit started operating MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aircraft from Hancock Field. The unmanned aircraft support military operations in Afghanistan.
The fighter wing launched its last flight of F-16 fighter aircraft in March 2010.
