OSWEGO -- As long as the weather cooperates, the Oswego County Health Department will conduct aerial spraying tonight. It will begin after 6:45 p.m. and will continue until the target area has been treated.
If the spraying is postponed due to weather, residents will be notified on the County's website www.oswegocounty.com.
The Health Department says residents living in the target area will receive a notice within twenty minutes of the decision to spray through the Oswego County Hyper-Reach (Reverse 911) Broadcast Notification Service.
The area that will be sprayed includes about 10,000 acres. The boundaries include U.S. Route 11 in Central Square to the west, NYS Route 49 to the north, up to but not including the village of Constantia to the east, and the shoreline of Oneida Lake to the south. Spraying will not take place over the waters of Oneida Lake.
The Oswego County Public Health Director emphasizes that aerial spraying is only a temporary fix. The best to way to prevent contracting West Nile Virus or Eastern equine encephalitis is to limit time outside between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active, and to wear long-sleeved shirts, shoes and socks while outside. Insect repellants are also helpful.
