SALINA (AP) -- Authorities say a 19-year-old man has died after he was struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle on a suburban Syracuse road.
Onondaga County sheriff's deputies tell local media outlets that Frederick Merchant of Clay was riding his bike on the shoulder of South Bay Road near the Route 81 overpass in the Town of Salina around 8:30 p.m. Sunday when he suddenly turned into the path of a sport utility vehicle.
Deputies say Merchant was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse and later pronounced dead.
Police say the SUV was driven by a 49-year-old Vincent Paladino from Liverpool.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
