NEWFIELD (AP) -- Police say two women have been killed and man is in critical condition following a head-on collision on a rural central New York road.

State police say 56-year-old Pamela Klemme of Syracuse was driving a sport utility vehicle Wednesday afternoon on Route 13 in the Tompkins County town of Newfield, just southwest of Ithaca, when she drove into the opposite lane and struck a car driven by 83-year-old Seymour Smidt of Ithaca.

Troopers say Klemme was taken to Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca, where she from her injuries. Smidt's passenger, 87-year-old Ruth Schwartz of Ithaca, died at the same hospital.

Smidt was transferred to Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, Pa., where he's listed in critical condition.
