FAYETTEVILLE -- A sold out crowd took part in the American Heart Association's Handbags Helping Hearts event Thursday night. A crowd of nearly 300 women packed the Stickley Audi & Company's Fayetteville Towne Center showroom to bid on handbags filled with goodies like gift cards, wine and chocolate in a silent auction.
It was also an opportunity for women to learn about the risk factors of heart disease and the warning signs of a heart attack. Some of the night's speakers included Anne Proppe, Go Red for Women chair Susan Crossett and cardiologist Dr. Uzma Iqbal.
The event raised $12,800. That includes ticket sales and all the auction proceeds. The total is almost $3,000 more than what was raised last year. The money benefits the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women program.
CNY Central donated a Michael Kors for Handbags Helping Hearts. The bag auctioned for more than $400.
The American Heart Association wants to remind women that:
• Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women age 20 and older, killing approximately one woman every minute;
• More women die of heart disease than the next four causes of death combined, including all forms of cancer;
• One in three American women die of heart disease, compared to one in 30 women who die of breast cancer;
• 90 percent of women have one or more risk factors for developing heart disease;
• 80 percent of cardiac events in women may be prevented if they make the right choices for their hearts, involving diet, exercise and abstinence from smoking.
