Honor Flight Syracuse will fly its first mission in October, taking World War II veterans from Hancock Airport to Washington, DC
The first flight is already full, as Honor Flight Syracuse gets ready to take World War ii veterans to Washington, DC for a day of reminisces.
John Paddock, from Skaneateles, has been organizing the Syracuse chapter of the national organization, which now has not-for profit status. He says the first flight will go October 6th, with plans to run other missions every spring and fall.
Honor Flight is concentrating on World War II veterans now, but any vet with a disability is eligible, and as time goes on, veterans from other conflicts, starting with Korea, will also be eligible for the day trip from Hancock Airport, to be followed by a welcome home reception. Paddock says the welcome home --and the thank you, even years later-- is a big part of the mission.
Volunteers will run the operation, with 75 to 80 signed up already, to do everything from paperwork to escorting vets who don't have family members to make the trip with them, to people to organize the homecoming. There will also be fundraising.
