SYRACUSE (AP) -- A former U.S. postmaster will spend 10 weekends in jail and five years on probation after admitting she stole more than $20,000 from the agency while running a small-town post office in northern New York.

Erin Woolschlager of Lowville pleaded guilty in May in U.S. District Court to a felony charge of misappropriation of postal funds. She also was ordered to perform 200 hours of community service and must pay back the $21,705 she took.

The 36-year-old Woolschlager was postmaster in Natural Bridge in Jefferson County when the thefts occurred.

Authorities say that beginning in December 2009, she cashed more than 100 Postal Service money orders totaling nearly $14,400 and stole $6,500 in postal funds. She used the money to pay bills and make purchases.
