ALBANY -- An emerald ash borer has been found in another trap in New York's Southern Tier, bringing the number of counties with confirmed findings to 13.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation says the invasive beetle that has been attacking ash trees across New York was found in a purple trap in the southwestern corner of Tioga County, near the Pennsylvania border.

The pest was first found near Detroit in 2002 and has been spreading east, with recent findings in New England for the first time.

Authorities continue to warn campers about moving untreated firewood around the state. Pests like the borer can hitchhike in wood to colonize new areas.

State and federal crews are trying a variety of tactics to slow the spread of the beetle.
