OSWEGO (AP) -- The U.S. Coast Guard is honoring a fire chief and a police officer for their heroics in rescuing two fishermen swept away by the fast-rising waters of a central New York river.
Rear Adm. Michael Parks, commander of the Cleveland-based 9th Coast Guard District, will present the Silver Lifesaving Medal to Oswego Fire Chief Jeffrey McCrobie and Oswego Police Sergeant Damian Waters during a ceremony being held Wednesday morning at the Coast Guard's Oswego station.
Heavy rains on Sept. 28, 2010 caused the Oswego River to rise several feet in just minutes, sweeping away four fishermen.
One of the men drowned, but firefighters used a boat to rescue one and McCrobie and Waters rescued the other two by jumping into the river, pulling them to safety and administering first aid.
