SYRACUSE -- Students at McKinley-Brighton Elementary School took part in a mile walk this morning as part of International Walk to School Day.

In addition to learning about fitness, students learned ways to stay safe while walking out on the street.

The Safe Kids Upstate New York Coalition is led by Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital, local law enforcement and FedEx volunteers who all took part in the event.

School Principal Colleen Levett says fitness is a lifetime lesson for all students.

More than 250,000 children across the nation are expected to participate in the annual event to learn about walking safely to and from school and to encourage the creation of safe walking environments.

For children ages 3 to 14, road traffic injuries are the leading cause of death. Each year over 500 children are killed for traffic injuries and every day, more than 61 children are injured severely enough to need medical attention.
