SYRACUSE -- The congressional campaign has focused on campaign ads this week, but Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle and Dan Maffei both say they know jobs and the economy are important issues for voters.

Welch Allyn, which employs 13,000 people in Skaneateles, plans to lay off 45 employees as part of a 10 percent corporate reduction over the next three years.

When the company made the announcement last month it blamed ObamaCare, specifically the 2.3 percent medical devices tax that would add to the cost of doing business.

When asked about this issue, Maffei told CNY Central that he opposed the tax. "I worked very closely with Welch Allyn against this tax. I support the full repeal of it," says Maffei.

Buerkle told CNY Central that she believes we can repeal the tax. "We just have to have the right people in place and in office to repeal that tax," says Buerkle.

An act of Congress won't be enough for Welch Allyn. When asked if a repeal would stop the job cuts, a company spokesman said the short answer is no.
