I-690 West to close Friday at 9am

SYRACUSE -- Drivers along 690 through Syracuse will need to get used to another detour, so state crews can fix a bridge that carries the westbound lanes over North Crouse Avenue.

The bridge will have its deck replaced beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday, October 12. Work will take place around-the-clock over the weekend and the bridge is expected to be re-opened to traffic at noon on Monday afternoon, October 15.

As the state has done in other recent 690 projects, precast concrete deck panels will be used to significantly reduce the construction duration. In fact, had the state used the traditional method, it says this project would have taken 12 weeks to complete.

The following closures / detours will be in effect during the construction period:

The Midler Avenue on-ramp to westbound I-690 will be closed;

The Teall Avenue on-ramp to westbound I-690 will be closed;

Westbound I-690 will be closed immediately beyond the Teall Avenue off-ramp (Exit 14);

Westbound I-690 traffic will be detoured to the Thompson Road and Teall Avenue off-ramps (Exits 16 and 14, respectively), proceed south to Erie Boulevard and travel west along Erie Boulevard, turning south on Almond Street, west on Washington Street and north onto West Street before returning to the I-690 westbound on-ramp.

Westbound I-690 traffic intending to reach southbound I-81 will be detoured to the Teall Avenue off-ramp, turn south (left) onto Teall Avenue to Erie Boulevard, proceed west (right) on Erie Boulevard and then follow existing I-81 signs turning south on Almond Street to southbound I-81 at Exit 18.

Westbound I-690 traffic intending to reach northbound I-81 will be detoured to the Teall Avenue off-ramp, turn south (left) on Teall Avenue to Erie Boulevard, proceed west (right) on Erie Boulevard and then follow existing I-81 signs turning north on State Street, left on Willow Street, then right onto Pearl Street to northbound I-81 at the Pearl Street on-ramp.

Westbound I-690 will remain open between Thompson Road and Teall Avenue, even though traffic is being detoured at both exits. The intent of detouring some traffic at Thompson Road is to reduce the traffic backups at the Teall Avenue exit.

In addition, North Crouse Avenue will be closed to all traffic between Canal Street and the north side of the I-690 bridge, from Monday, October 8 to Monday, October 29.

During the period of closure, motorists should expect major delays along Almond Street, Teall Avenue, Thompson Road, Erie Boulevard between Thompson Road and West Street and at intersections near the I-81 / I-690 interchange.
