Local leaders say Hancock Airport is arguably the most important economic engine in Syracuse, and renovation progress is fuel to move it forward.
One year into renovations, construction is right on track to be finished next September.
The project includes LEED certified updates, and implementing several sustainability techniques, but the focus is on streamlining passenger and baggage screening.
Hancock Airport has had more travelers in recent years, and as a result of that, passengers have experienced more delays.
When the project is finished, there will be a new central checkpoint. Stephanie Miner, the Mayor of Syracuse, says when that's done, the wait time will go down considerably. "We also think it will help us significantly in recruiting more low cost airlines," she says.
It's also a chance to go green, and upgrade into the 21st century.
Many of the sustainability techniques are being designed in Central New York. LEED certified updates feature a rainwater harvest system for flushing toilets and urinals, and high efficiency lighting. Construction products incorporate recycled materials, and three quarters of demolition and construction debris were recycled from landfills.
When the project is complete, the Hancock Airport will be the first in the state to be LEED Certified.
The estimated completion date is September 2013.
