ROMULUS (AP) -- An upstate New York prison has been locked down after an inmate fight escalated into a melee with guards.

The state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision says Five Points Correctional Facility in Seneca County will be locked down five days as the brawl is investigated and searches are completed.

The fight started just after 9 p.m. Sunday when inmates turned on corrections officers trying to stop an assault in the yard.

The agency says Monday it was broken up when other guards intervened and a tower guard fired a gas canister.

It says two guards were taken to a medical facility, one for a broken hand and the other for a cut near the eye. Eight inmates being transferred to other prisons.

Five Points holds about 1,400 prisoners in Romulus, 40 miles southwest of Syracuse.
