CONQUEST (NY) -- Authorities say a 40-year-old woman has been charged with second-degree murder after she fatally shot her live-in boyfriend during an argument at their central New York home, then called 911 to report the shooting.

The Cayuga County Sheriff's office tells local media outlets that the shooting happened around 6 p.m. Sunday at the home of Brenda Newkirk and 42-year-old Henry Davis Jr. in the rural town of Conquest, 25 miles west of Syracuse.

Officials say Newkirk is being held in the county jail without bail.

Deputies say Davis called 911 at about 6 p.m. to report he and Newkirk were having an argument. Police say a few minutes later, Newkirk called emergency dispatchers and said she had shot Davis. Deputies who arrived a short time later found him dead.
