NEW YORK (AP) -- The Metropolitan Transportation Authority said waters have surged into two major commuter tunnels and into subway stations and tracks.

MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota says the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, the Queens Midtown Tunnel and seven subway tunnels under the East River all had flooding. The MTA also cut power to some subway stations in lower Manhattan after water came into the stations and tracks.

Lhota says the New York City subway system is 108 years old, but has never faced a disaster as devastating as what they experienced Monday night.

He says the MTA is assessing the extent of the damage and is committed to restoring the system as quickly as it can.
