SYRACUSE (AP) -- Authorities say a lawyer employed by a federal court in Syracuse has been suspended after pleading guilty to molesting a 10-year-old boy.

Onondaga County prosecutors tell The Post-Standard of Syracuse that 48-year-old Thomas Smith of Lysander pleaded guilty two weeks ago in town court in his hometown to a misdemeanor charge of second-degree sexual abuse.

Smith admitted engaging in sexual contact with the boy in May and June at Smith's home.

Prosecutors say Smith will be sentenced in December to six years' probation. He'll also be required to register as a convicted sex offender.

Smith is an employee of the U.S. District Court in Syracuse, where he works in the office of Magistrate Andrew Baxter. Prosecutors say he has been suspended while federal authorities review his case.
