ALBANY (AP) -- New Yorkers will have extra time to apply for an absentee ballot in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

The state Board of Elections met in an emergency meeting late Wednesday and approved an extension until Friday, Nov. 2. The original deadline was Oct. 30, the day after the massive storm pounded the Atlantic coast.

Voters may still cast absentee ballots in person up to Monday, November 5th.

Polls are open in New York from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday. To see if a poll site has changed because of the storm, check the board's website, www.elections.ny.gov, or the local county board website.

Absentee ballots must be postmarked by Monday, Nov. 5 but can now be received at local boards of elections until Nov. 19 instead of Nov. 13.

More information is available on the Board of Elections website.
