Red Cross blood drive at the Civic Center

SYRACUSE -- Onondaga County, the city of Syracuse and the American Red Cross held a large blood drive in Syracuse to help out with the Hurricane Sandy relief effort.
The blood drive was held at the Onondaga County Civic Center in Syracuse on Monday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
The Red Cross encourages to schedule an appointment in advance by calling 1-800-RED CROSS or visiting redcrossblood.org. If you can’t make it to Monday’s blood drive, you can schedule an appointment for a later date.
One of those donating blood was Syracuse University student Danielle Lindgren. After seeing the scenes of devastation left behind by Sandy, Lindgren says she was happy to do something to help.
"I thought it was something I could do to better the community and give my support in any way that I can since I can't actually be there," Lindgren says.
The super storm forced the cancellation of more than 325 blood drives in 13 states and the Red Cross says it’s resulted in a shortfall of thousands of units of blood and platelets.The Red Cross says that nationwide, around 44,000 blood donations are needed each and every day to meet the needs of accident victims, cancer patients, and children with blood disorders.
The Red Cross is also accepting charitable donations online or you can text the word REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
