SYRACUSE -- The United States Marine Corps celebrated its 237th anniversary today and a flag was raised at City Hall to honor the occasion.

Mayor Stephanie Miner was joined by members of the 224th Detachment of the Greater Syracuse Marine Corps League for the flag raising ceremony.

The Marine Corps was founded on November 10, 1775, and since then, has fought in every military engagement in U.S. history. There are more than 200,000 active duty Marines and more than 40,000 in reserve forces.

“It is an honor to pay tribute to the men and women of the United States Marine Corps both past and present,” said Miner. “They are the first to fight for right and freedom and I am proud to be part of their anniversary celebration.”

Miner also issued a proclamation declaring Saturday, November 10, as officially the 237th birthday of the Marine Corps in the City of Syracuse.
