ALBANY -- The New York State Police conducted graduation exercises Tuesday for its 2012 Basic Canine Handler School.

The 12 canines will be placed all over the state, including in Central New York.

One of the K-9's is named "Mandin" after Trooper Amanda Anna, 31, who was killed in the line of duty in a motor vehicle crash on County Route 37 in Hastings. Trooper Anna was a 6-year veteran, assigned to the Hastings barracks. She was survived by a 4-year old son, her fiance, and mother and step-father.

The ceremony was conducted in Albany and is a culmination of 20 weeks of training at the Division Canine Training Facility located in Cooperstown.

“Canines and their handlers play an important role in public safety,” said New York State Police Superintendent Joseph D’Amico said in a media release. “Together they have proven to be an extremely successful law enforcement tool.”
