SARANAC LAKE (AP) -- Police say a 55-year-old northern New York man who reported he was shot and robbed by two men actually shot himself in the shoulder and tossed his rifle in the river.

William Martin of Saranac Lake faces misdemeanor charges of falsely reporting an incident and making a false written statement. Saranac Lake Police Chief Bruce Nason tells the Adirondack Enterprise that Martin claimed to have been shot last week on a railroad trestle by two men who then ran off.

Martin was treated at a hospital for the gunshot wound. Nason said police realized parts of Martin's story didn't add up as they conducted an investigation. They found Martin's rifle in the river.

Nason said he didn't know why Martin would have made up the robbery story.
