TOWN OF TAYLOR -- A Cortland County is man facing assault charges after beating a man who refused to let him repossess his vehicle, according to Cortland County Sheriff’s Sgt. David Tobias.

At about 9:00 PM last Tuesday, November 20, officers from the Cortland County Sheriff’s office were called to 3356 Route 26 in the Town of Taylor due to an assault that had happened during a vehicle repossession.

After what Sgt. Tobias called a brief investigation, it was learned that 38-year-old Michael G. Thayer attempted to repossess a vehicle for the lien holder on the vehicle.  The victim stood in front of the vehicle, trying to prevent Thayer from repossessing it.

When the victim would not move, Thayer and an unidentified man got out of the vehicle that they were in and began kicking the victim.  The victim fell to the ground and Thayer and the other man left with the vehicle.

Thayer has an address of 2049 East River Road in the Town of Cortlandville.  He was arrested on Thursday and was released on an appearance ticket.  He is due in the Town of Taylor Court on December 5, 2012 on a misdemeanor assault charge.

The victim was treated at the Cortland Regional Medical Center on the night of the incident.

The investigation is ongoing and more arrests may be made.
