LOWVILLE (AP) -- A northern New York village's Civil War monument is back in place after a year-long restoration project.

The Watertown Daily Times reports that Lowville sent its 38-foot-tall memorial to Oberlin, Ohio, for repairs after years of fundraising and help from a $143,000 state grant.

The base bearing the names of soldiers and key battles in the war is topped with a zinc statue that had been damaged by earlier restoration efforts.

Workers put it back in place in the Lewis County community on Thursday. Lowville is 60 miles northeast of Syracuse.
