FORT DRUM -- The 1st Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum is one of three major units to deploy as part of the upcoming rotation of forces operating in Afghanistan.
The Department of Defense identified the 1st Brigade Combat Team as one unit to deploy to Afghanistan as a Security Force Assistance Brigade this winter. Their primary role will be to advise Afghan units and help them achieve levels of proficiency where they can lead and conduct independent security operations.
"Another great Brigade from our Division will answer the Nations call as the 1st Brigade Combat Team Warriors will deploy to help build the capacity of our Afghan partners," said Maj. Gen. Mark A. Milley, the commander of Fort Drum and the 10th Mountain Division in a news release Friday.
“The Warrior Brigade is fully prepared for our upcoming deployment to Afghanistan. We are trained and ready to execute this mission on behalf of our nation. Elements of this brigade were the first to deploy to Afghanistan in 2001, and we are proud to be a part this team that will help set conditions for a successful conclusion. The continued support of our North Country neighbors and Fort Drum community has been invaluable to our Soldiers and their Families as we prepare to deploy,” said Col. Stephen Michael, Commander 1st Brigade Combat Team in a news release.
