WILLIAMSVILLE (AP) -- Tops Friendly Markets says it will buy three Big M supermarkets in central New York.

Western New York-based Tops announced the agreement Thursday. The stores are in Elbridge at 227 East Main Street, Mexico at 3385 Main Street and Jordan at 9 Mechanic Street.

"We are excited about this growth opportunity for Tops, as we bring these new stores into the Tops family," said Tops Markets president and CEO, Frank Curci.

Tops says there won't be any interruption in service and plans to keep all of the 161 Big M employees who work at the stores now.

Tops has 150 locations in upstate New York, northern Pennsylvania and western Vermont. Earlier this year, it announced the acquisition of 21 Grand Union stores and in 2010 acquired all Penn Traffic stores.

The sale is expected to close by December 31, 2012.
