SYRACUSE -- A survivor of the Aurora theater shooting in July, and Syracuse University alum, spoke out on Huffington Post Live about the tragedy in Connecticut on Friday.

Stephen Barton, 22, says he grew up 15 minutes from Newtown, where a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School killing 26 people, most of which were children.

"I thought we were going to get somewhere after what happened in Aurora," said Barton.

In October, just before the presidential debates, Barton appeared in an ad that called on viewers to consider which presidential candidate has "a plan to stop gun violence."

The ad was sponsored by Mayors Against Illegal Guns as part of a campaign called Demand a Plan. The campaign’s website encourages visitors to sign a petition demanding that President Obama and Mitt Romney create a plan to end gun violence.

Barton said on Friday that if history is any indication, President Obama needs to take action this time.
