SU Head Basketball Coach Jim Boeheim was happy to beat Canisius on Saturday night, but after the game found himself defending his sophomore guard Michael Carter-Williams against reports that he had been caught shoplifting. The Post Standard reported on Friday that Carter-Williams had been seen shoplifting from Lord & Taylor at Destiny USA late last Sunday afternoon according to two unnamed sources with direct knowledge of the situation.
"I'm not going to make an action or take an action based on what's in the paper, ever, I hope." said Boeheim, "If I do, shoot me."
The report says that Carter-Williams paid the store a $500 fine to settle the matter, and that police were not called to the scene. Boeheim says he's satisfied that the police have found nothing to investigate, and that the store in question is happy and satisfied with the result.
"I also wouldn't take something that's written in the paper as the truth all the time. The Tomaselli name comes to mind," said Boeheim, in reference to Zach Tomaselli who admitted he lied about being sexually abused by former SU assistant coach Bernie Fine, "so because it's in the paper doesn't mean it's true."
