KEENE, N.Y. (AP) -- Authorities say a Syracuse man has been rescued after surviving a fall down an Adirondack mountainside and spending the night in freezing temperatures.

The state Department of Environmental Conservation says Monday that 41-year-old Calum Stewart was hiking with three others Saturday afternoon when he tumbled about 150 feet down a slide on Nippletop Mountain in the Essex County town of Keene.

One of the hikers went to his aid while the other two headed down the mountain to seek help. A rescue team of DEC forest rangers reached Stewart at 3:40 a.m. Sunday.

Because hazardous weather conditions prevented the use of a state police helicopter, forest rangers weren't able to get Stewart out of the woods until Sunday night.

Stewart was listed in critical condition Monday at a local hospital.
