SYRACUSE -- Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner is teaming up with more than 750 mayors from across the country to call on the president to enact what they say are 'common sense' gun control measures.

Miner has been a part of the Mayors Against Illegal Guns Coalition since 2009, and she says because gun control is now one of the most talked about issues in the country, it is an opportunity for change.

"We think this is an opportunity now that this has seized the national attention...we cannot stop, that's what our job as leaders, and public and elected officials is, to change the law to make our country safer for the people who live in it," Miner says.

Today, Miner signed a letter sent by the coalition to President Obama, spelling out 'common sense' legislative proposals to prevent future tragedies.

The coalition proposed to require every gun buyer to pass a criminal background check, to get high capacity rifles and ammunition magazines off the streets and make gun trafficking a federal crime.

Miner says after the Sandy Hook school shooting, action involving gun control cannot wait.
