FULTON (AP) -- A company that has purchased the closed Birds Eye plant in central New York plans to open a food-processing facility that will employ 183 people.

The Post-Standard of Syracuse reports that the plant was purchased last week by a real estate holding company. New York is giving the company up to $1 million in Excelsior tax credits in exchange for a commitment to create 183 jobs.

When Birds Eye closed its vegetable-processing plant in December 2011, it eliminated 280 jobs. Oswego County's 9.5 percent unemployment rate in November was one of the highest in the state.

Birds Eye was acquired in December 2009 by Pinnacle. The company closed Birds Eye's corporate headquarters in Rochester in 2010 and moved it to New Jersey.

Fulton Mayor Ronald Woodward tells the newspaper the new ownership group isn't ready to disclose the name of the food-processing company that will go into the facility.
