LIVERPOOL -- The victim of the fiery SUV rollover crash on Old Liverpool Road last Friday is reportedly a Nigerian national who had been living in the United States under an assumed name after he stole the identity of a North Carolina man, according to the Onondaga County Sheriff's Department.

Police have identified the man and are working with the United States Department of State to contact the man’s family. Officials will release his name after his family has been notified.

Detectives investigating the crash say the victim is a Nigerian national who had been living in the US under an assumed name. The man had stolen the identity of a North Carolina man and obtained a New York State Driver’s license.

Detectives say the cause of the fire appears to accidental or mechanical in nature. They believe the man became disoriented by the fire, which made it difficult for him to exit the vehicle.

Several witnesses told CNY Central that smoke was seen coming from the vehicle before it crashed into a snow bank and burst into flames across the street from Juanita's Mexican Kitchen in Liverpool.
