NEW YORK (AP) -- A gun control group formed in the wake of last month's Newtown, Conn., massacre is holding a moment of silence in New York City for all victims of gun violence.

One Million Moms for Gun Control says the event is inspired by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.'s message of nonviolence. They began marching across the Brooklyn Bridge on Monday morning for a rally at City Hall.

They're calling on Congress to follow New York's lead and enact stricter limits on weapons and ammunition purchases.

Its founder, Shannon Watts, is scheduled to speak at the rally.

The group also is pushing for the closing of loopholes that allow some gun sales without background checks; boundaries on how much ammunition can be purchased; and limits on the scope of concealed weapons laws.
