SYRACUSE -- The Syracuse Police Department is urging citizens not to leave their vehicles running and unattended.

Due to the recent severe cold temperatures, more people are leaving their vehicles unattended with the motors running to try to warm it up or defrost windows.  This makes it easy for a vehicle to be stolen.

It is actually a violation of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law Section to leave a running vehicle unattended.

The Syracuse Police says that it will increase ticketing on violations of this law in an effort to get voluntary compliance and to reduce crimes of opportunity.

People are encouraged to turn the vehicle off and take the keys with them when leaving the vehicle for any period of time.
