(AP) -- The Senate Judiciary Committee has advanced the nomination of a New York City law professor to the state's highest court, but only after many Republican senators faulted Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo's choice for limited experience as a trial lawyer and judge.

Chairman John Bonacic, a Middletown Republican, says he'll forward Jenny Rivera's name to the full Senate next week, while also faulting the Cuomo administration for not consulting senators earlier about the selection.

With 11 Democrats voting for the City University of New York professor, three Republican senators on the committee voted to forward her nomination without recommendation.

Eight other Republicans voted no, and one was absent.

If confirmed as expected, Rivera would replace Judge Carmen Beauchamp Ciparick, who retired at the end of last year.
