NEW YORK -- A Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Central New York through Saturday morning. The warning extends into most of New England, New York and into northern Pennsylvania.

The winter storm has canceled some flights out of Syracuse Hancock International Airport. Nearly all flights from Hancock to the eastern seaboard are canceled for Saturday.

The Lewis County Sheriff's Office has issued a Travel Advisory for all of Lewis County. Caution is advised since hazardous driving conditions such as slippery and icy roads could be encountered.

Central New York escape the very heaviest part of the storm, but should see about 5-12 total inches of snow by the end of the storm Saturday morning. There will be spotty, light snow throughout the area early in the day Friday with the heavier snow coming after 2 p.m. Friday afternoon. Snowfall should begin to taper off afer midnight and cloudiness and flurries will give way to brisk winds and colder temperatures.

The Watertown area could see accumulations of up to 12 inches in some spots.

Syracuse Police are reminding all city residents to follow parking regulations in preparation for the storm and snow removal operations. Residents are encouraged to avoid parking on city streets when possible and to follow odd/even parking regulations if parking.

The hardest hit area still looks to be along the New England coast southward through Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island and into New York City where Blizzard Warnings are in effect. In this Blizzard Warning area 18-30 inches of snow appear likely with wind gusts of over 50 mph. Boston could get up to 3 feet of snow, while New York City was expecting 10 to 14 inches. To the south, Philadelphia was looking at a possible 2 to 5 inches.

The snow should become steadier and heavier Friday afternoon into Friday night as the coastal storm intensifies some 150 miles southeast of New York City. By mid-morning on Saturday, at least for Central New York, this storm will be over and the remainder of the weekend should be quiet.

Amtrak says its Northeast trains will stop running Friday afternoon.

In New England, it could prove to be among the top 10 snowstorms in history, and perhaps even break Boston's record of 27.6 inches, set in 2003, forecasters said. The last major snowfall in southern New England was well over a year ago - the Halloween storm of 2011.
