ROME -- Several people in Rome were without power on Sunday after a drunk driving accident brought down a power pole on Route 46/Rome New London Road.

Sheriff Robert Maciol says 45-year-old Kirk Carter of Rome drove off the road, striking several trees and taking down a power pole. Several live power lines were down on Carter's car as a result of the accident.

Officials say Carter got out of his car through the passenger window, fleeing the scene. Sheriff's Deputies arrested Carter after a foot chase.

Carter was treated at St. Elizabeth's Hospital for head and leg injuries, and is charged with D-W-I.

Rome New London Road was closed for several hours following the accident, and National Grid spent several hours on scene restoring power to area homes.
