AUBURN (AP) -- A painting given to William H. Seward before he became Abraham Lincoln's secretary of state is being put up for sale.

The 1839 painting by Hudson River School founder Thomas Cole was given to Seward when he was governor of New York before the Civil War. The landscape titled "Portage Falls on the Genesee" depicts a view of what is now Letchworth State Park in western New York.

The painting had hung in Seward's home in Auburn, now the Seward House Museum. The foundation that owns the artwork tells The Citizen of Auburn that the recent discovery of the painting's value and the need for greater security prompted the decision to remove the painting and sell it.

Foundation officials aren't saying how much the painting may be worth.
