SYRACUSE -- Police have a stern warning for those who live in the South Campus community at Syracuse University; lock your doors and windows.

After two burglaries over the weekend, SU's Department of Public Safety has increased patrols around the Winding Ridge neighborhood.

It's also released tips to help students stay safe:

--If you're walking at night, police say, remember there is safety in numbers.

--If you are alone, travel in well lit-areas, away from bushes, cars, and other things people can hide behind.

--Be aware of your surroundings -- headphones and cell phones are sometimes distracting.

--If you do think someone is following you, switch directions or cross the street.

--Have your keys ready before you get to your door, and remember you can use the Blue Light system on campus.

--If someone does try to rob you, police say don't resist. It's better to give up your property than lose your life.

If you see something suspicious, or feel unsafe, call Syracuse Police at 442-5222, or SU Department of Public Safety at 443-2224.

You can also send a text message to 711@syr.edu.

If you have any information that could be helpful in solving last weekend's burglaries, you're encouraged to reach out to police.

If you would like to anonymously report non-emergency information to the Department of Public Safety, you can use the Silent Witness tool
