PARISHVILLE, NY (AP) -- Authorities say two men, aged 78 and 87, have died after driving their snowmobiles off ice into a northern New York reservoir.

State police say the accident happened around 8 p.m. Monday in the St. Lawrence County town of Parishville, on the northern edge of the Adirondack Park, 140 miles northeast of Syracuse.

Troopers say Robert Campbell of Canton and Robert Whalen of Norwood were traveling on ice when they got disoriented in blowing snow and drove into open water. Two companions on snowmobiles tried to rescue them with a canoe and one, Campbell's 56-year-old son Daniel Campbell of Hamlin, fell into the water.

The three men were taken to Canton-Potsdam Hospital, where the 78-year-old Campbell and 87-year-old Whalen were pronounced dead. The younger Campbell was treated for hypothermia.
