COOPERSTOWN, NY (AP) -- The head of the Oneida Nation goes to the Cooperstown Central School District on Wednesday, to present a check, for the district's change from the 'Redskins' to the 'Hawkeyes.'

Students urged the mascot change, saying the current name is offensive to American Indians. Oneida Nation Representative Ray Halbritter was so impressed that he offered to help underwrite costs of changing athletic uniforms and more.

The Redskins nickname, which goes back to the 1920s will be retired on June 30th.

Cooperstown is best known as the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, but it was also the hometown of James Fenimore Cooper, who wrote "The Leatherstocking Tales," and Hawkeye was the nickname of one of his main characters.
