Dozens of people were out rallying against Governor Andrew Cuomo's proposal to cut $120 million in state funding for those with disabilities.
The rally on Friday afternoon at the State Office Building in downtown Syracuse included members from local organizations that receive state support including the Learning Disabled Association, Exceptional Family Resources, and Disabled Action of Greater Syracuse, among others.
According to the New York Times, the Governor is trying to deal with a $500 million gap in his budget after the federal government changed is reimbursements for disability programs.
Former Onondaga County Legislator Hal Brown, who has a daughter with disabilities, spoke out at the protest. "It's unreal that they can't find monies in other areas to take away instead of doing this to these wonderful people," he said.
The Governor says the state needs to tighten it's belt but those rallying Friday say the cuts hurt their independence making it difficult not to have to rely on others.
