Oswego, Lewis counties 2nd highest in state
According to a new report by the New York State Labor Department, unemployment is slightly up here in Central New York.
The report compares the jobless rates from January of 2012 and January of 2013.
The rate in the Syracuse area rose from 9.5% to 9.8%. The Ithaca area saw a minor increase from 6.6% to 6.7% while the Utica-Rome area rose from 9.6% to 10.2%.
Elmira saw the biggest increase for an upstate area, rising from 8.8% in January '12 to 10.5% in January '13.
Looking at a county-by-county breakdown, Tompkins County has the lowest unemployment rates in the state at 6.7%, followed by Putnam, Rockland and Nassau counties.
Oswego and Lewis Counties have the second highest unemployment rates statewide at 12.7%. Bronx County is the highest at 13.4%.

There is some good news. The reports says the state's private sector job count increased by 102,600 during the same period. Statewide, the unemployment rate was 8.4% as of January of 2013.
