An 18-year-old man accused of stabbing a trooper patrolling downtown Albany's state government complex has pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and other charges.

Albany County District Attorney P. David Soares says Eric Green of Brooklyn also faces charges of assault, aggravated assault on a police officer and robbery.

Authorities say Trooper Rodney Smith was working March 3 at the Empire State Plaza when he was approached by Green, who said he was new in town and needed help.

They say that as Smith was checking his identity, Green stabbed him in the neck and ran off with Smith's radio after unsuccessfully trying to take his gun.

Smith was released from a hospital two days later.

After his arraignment Wednesday, Green was returned to Albany County Jail without bail.
