SYRACUSE -- Reaction to the new Pope continues to pour in across the world and right here in Central New York.
Bishop Robert Cunningham released a statement on the election of Pope Francis, calling it a joyful, happy occasion to welcome Cardinal Bergoglio as the new leader of the Catholic Church.
"Pope Francis asked for the favor of our prayers. I trust the clergy, religious, and laity of the Diocese of Syracuse will honor his request as we join him 'in the journey of friendship, of love, of trust and of faith.' To him we pledge not only our prayer but also our affection and loyalty," said Bishop Cunningham.
The Bishop will lead a mass at 12:10 p.m. on Thursday at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in downtown Syracuse to pray for Pope Francis.
