ALBANY (AP) -- The man who's considered America's first novelist and the author of "Where the Wild Things Are" will be inducted into the New York State Writers Hall of Fame.
The Empire State Center for the Book says James Fenimore Cooper and Maurice Sendak are among the eight members of the 2013 class who will be inducted on June 4 at the Princeton Club of New York. The other inductees are Marilyn Hacker, Alice McDermott, Walter Mosley, Calvin Trillin, Countee Cullen and Miguel Pinero.
Cooper wrote such 19th-century classics as "The Last of the Mohicans." He died in 1851 at his home in Cooperstown, the upstate village founded by his father in the late 18th century.
Sendak, who died last year, was a writer and illustrator best known for "Where the Wild Things Are."
