PULASKI -- Tuesday night more than 350 people in the Village of Pulaski stopped by the polls to vote on whether to abolish their police department.

Neighbors let their voices be heard, voting to keep the police department despite the cost. The final vote count was 217 for keeping the force, and only 147 voting to abolish the department. The village clerk was impressed with voter turnout.

Eliminating the Pulaski police department could have saved the village about $200,000 a year. The mayor indicated keeping the force would increase taxes by nearly 20 percent.

If the police department was abolished, calls would have been answered by State Police and Oswego County Sheriff's Deputies, but neighbors were worried those agencies would have a longer response time, resulting in more crime.
