FORT DRUM (AP) -- Fort Drum in northern New York is getting a new commander next week.

Officials at the Army post say a change-of-command ceremony is scheduled Monday morning for the new commander, Maj. General Stephen Townsend. He's taking over command of the 10th Mountain Division from Maj. Gen. Mark Milley (MIHL'-ee).

Army officials say Milley has been nominated for promotion to the rank of lieutenant general. His new assignment will be commanding general of III Corps and Fort Hood in Texas. Milley has been commander of Fort Drum since November 2011.

Townsend is a 30-year Army veteran who recently served in a staff position in Washington. He previously served at Fort Drum in the late 90s and early 2000s, and has led combat troops in Iraq and Afghanistan.
